Dell has impressed us lately with a great range of laptops to suit all users, and the Inspiron 15r N5110 is no exception. It's quite expensive for a mid-range laptop, but still offers great value for money, thanks to its excellent performance.

That extra cash buys you the latest Intel Core i5 2410M processor, which is a step above the Core i3 processors found in most of the other machines at this price. While other laptops can comfortably run all of your applications, the Dell provides an extra bit of future-proofing and won't need replacing any time soon. Even the most demanding software loads quickly and runs smoothly.

You also get a powerful dedicated Nvidia GT 525M graphics card, while most other laptops make do with basic integrated graphics, where the processor also has to handle image rendering. The result is much better multimedia performance. High-definition (HD) movies run perfectly, you can comfortably edit all of your media, and gamers can play the latest titles without sacrificing graphics quality for a smooth frame rate.

The 15.6-inch screen is bright, although the Packard Bell EasyNote NS44 HR-033UK compact screen is sharper. However, we found the Dell's screen was vibrant enough to fully enjoy our photos and films, with decent viewing angles.

The built-in SRS speakers are some of the most powerful, making them good for music and movies, although audiophiles will prefer a dedicated external pair.

While the Dell offers good performance, it's by no means the most portable. We didn't quite get three hours of use from the battery when watching films, although this isn't a bad result, and if you're simply typing out an essay or doing some other light work, you can expect to get another hour or so out of the battery such as Dell 01X284 Battery, Dell 083KV Battery, Dell 0F965N Battery, Dell 0X217 Battery, Dell 0XR693 Battery, Dell 1691P Battery, Dell 1894W Battery, Dell 1G222 Battery, Dell 1X793 Battery, Dell 2127U Battery, Dell 2941E Battery, Dell 310-0083 Battery.

At 2.7kg it's quite heavy for a laptop, which also limits portability. Still, it can be carried around if needed and the body isn't too chunky to be a pain when you have to cram it into your backpack.

This laptop might not be perfectly portable, but it's certainly attractive. The dark brushed-metal finish looks slick, with only a little flex around the edges, and our model came with one of Dell's swappable SWITCH lids. You get a choice of over twenty colourful designs, which make a refreshing change from the standard plain efforts. If you get sick of one design, just order a new one from Dell and they'll ship it out.

Like many of the laptops here, an isolation-style keyboard has been used. The keys are well spaced, but we found the board to be spongy, with considerable flex in the middle when typing. It's not a serious issue and you soon get used to it, but we expected better.

Connections are plentiful, with VGA and HDMI ports for hooking up external displays and even an eSATA port for attaching external hard drives. With 500GB of built-in storage, you'll most likely only need an external drive when backing up your important files.

If you need the extra power and have the cash to spare, the Inspiron 15r is a great student laptop that will last you for a few years. However, portability and usability aren't as strong as we would have liked.

Could Your Battery Be a Time Bomb

In August 2006, the computer manufacturer Dell recalled 4.1 million of its laptop batteries because of a potentially lethal fault - some were liable to burst into flames. Dell batteries in laptops made between April 2004 and July 2006 were found to be faulty after several incidents in which a Dell laptop battery caught fire or even exploded.

In June 2006, a Dell battery caused a notebook to burst into flames at a conference in Japan. The following month, firefighters in Illinois were called out to extinguish a burning laptop which had partially destroyed the desk beneath it, while in Nevada, a burning Dell battery in the a pickup truck ignited ammunition in the glove compartment, triggering an explosion in the engine. Dell officially admitted to several similar incidents, while other reports suggested that hundreds of burned and melted laptops had been returned to the manufacturer.

Miraculously, no-one was injured in any of these incidents. But Dell's recall of the batteries was at the time the largest safety recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Not Just a Dell Battery Problem

The recall highlighted the potential dangers of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries like Dell 1691P Battery, Dell 1894W Battery, Dell 1G222 Battery, Dell 1X793 Battery, Dell 2127U Battery, Dell 2941E Battery, Dell 310-0083 Battery, Dell 312-0068 Battery, Dell 312-0518 Battery, Dell 312-0625 Battery, Dell 312-3250 Battery, Dell 3149C Battery are one of the cheapest type of laptop battery available, which makes them very popular with electronics manufacturers. They can be found not only in laptop computers, but in other devices such as mobile phones, cordless power tools, digital cameras, camcorders, and MP3 players. While incidents of lithium-ion batteries catching fire are comparatively few, the huge number of electronic devices now used by consumers means they do present a considerable risk.

The Dell batteries in question were found to contain microscopic particles of metal, a by-product of the manufacturing process. It is believed the explosions were caused by these particles piercing the separator inside the batteries, causing them to short-circuit. This set off a chain reaction within the cells of the batteries which made them overheat extremely rapidly, increasing the temperature of the batteries by a few hundred degrees in the fraction of a second. It was this fault which prompted the recall of such a large number of Dell battery products.

But it was not just Dell batteries that were found to have this fault. The batteries were made by Sony, who sell laptop batteries to many of the world's major computer manufacturers. Many other laptop manufacturers were forced to recall large numbers of laptop batteries for safety reasons.

Are You Using a Faulty Dell Battery?

But how many of the faulty Dell batteries were actually returned to Dell? While the laptop fires sparked news stories around the globe, and Dell issued a public safety recall of the batteries, many people may still have missed this information. Could you be one of them? Are you using a Dell laptop manufactured between 2004 and 2006? If so, could your Dell battery potentially become a lethal hazard?

A list of the affected laptop models, along with information on how to identify a faulty Dell battery, can be found at the Dell web site. Sending the battery to Dell and waiting for a safe replacement means spending time unable to use your laptop, so it is a good idea to find a Dell spare parts supplier online who can supply you with a replacement Dell battery which won't burst into flames.

The Dell Inspiron i15RN5110-5816DBK ($799.99 list at Best Buy) is a well-built, competent desktop replacement laptop, and its Intel Core i5-2410M processor is more than capable of handling of your productivity tasks and web-browsing needs. Unfortunately, its Dell 8649R Battery competitors manage to outshine it by offering better features for less—like the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066A9U ($629.99 list, 4 stars).

Design

The i15RN5110-5816DBK has a plastic chassis with a glossy black lid and palm rest. Though made of black plastic, it has a unique textured appearance beneath the glossy finish, which Dell calls Dell 8027U Battery Diamond Black. It looks pretty good, but it will need to be wiped down from time to time to remove fingerprints. Measuring 10.2 by 14.8 by 1.4 inches (HWD), and weighing 5.87 pounds, the Dell Inspiron i15R isn't the lightest in the category—that honor goes to the 5.5-pound Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars)—but it's still light enough to carry to work or school.

MoreThe full-size keyboard has an adjacent numeric pad, both with chiclet-style keys. These matte-black keys are well spaced, and the typing experience was comfortable enough that I'd freely use it for all the writing I do. The multitouch track pad was competent, with separate right and left buttons, but the mouse buttons were a bit stiff to click Dell 8N544 Battery.

The 15.5-inch widescreen display has 1,366 by 768 resolution, which is pretty common in the 15-inch space. The i15RN5110-5816DBK also has a generic set of stereo speakers, but the sound they produce was clear at regular volumes and relatively distortion free at high volume. You won't, however, get any sort of bass out of these speakers.

Features

The i15RN5110-5816DBK has a full feature set for an $800 laptop. In addition to standard connections like headphone and microphone jacks, Ethernet and VGA monitor output, you'll also find HDMI output, one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a combination USB/eSATA port. A multiformat card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro) is found on the left side of the laptop, and a dual-layer DVD +/- RW optical drive can be found on the right. Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi are standard Dell 75UYF Battery features, but features you might not see on other systems in this price range include Bluetooth support and WiDi 2.0, which allows you to wirelessly stream 1080p multimedia to any HDTV using a Netgear Push2TV receiver.

It is worth noting that several connections, namely the VGA, Ethernet, a USB 3.0 port, the power connection and a Kensington Lock slot are all found on the back of the i15RN5110-5816DBK on the chassis with the hinges. Dell is the only manufacturer I've seen that places a significant number of ports on the back of a machine, and it struck me as odd that they would hide several ports in such an awkward place. It also worried me when using any sort of USB drive in the rear port, as having the drive in the back, out of sight, would increase the risk of accidentally damaging it by bumping it or snagging it against Dell 6Y270 Battery something.

Port placement aside, the i15RN5110-5816DBK is equipped with a spacious 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive. While it should provide plenty of storage capacity for your programs and media collections, comparable systems, like the HP dv7-6135dx, offer 750GB of space. On the hard drive you'll find a few programs pre-installed, like a 60-day trial of McAfee Security, a similar trial of Microsoft Office 2010, and a Bing toolbar. This isn't a huge amount of bloatware, as Best Buy lets you side step most of the usual clutter with their Best Buy PC App, which lets you select only the spyware options you Dell 6T473 Battery actually want or need.

If you want a little more peace of mind with your purchase, Best Buy also offers two extended protection plans. Their standard 2-year protection plan ($139.99) covers the system against normal wear and tear, power surge damage, and includes a "No Lemon" guarantee in which Best Buy will simply replace the computer if it requires more than four repairs during the coverage period. Best Buy's advanced plan ($249.99) also covers the laptop against accidental damage from drops and spills.

Performance

Dell outfitted the i15RN5110-5816DBK with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core processor and 6GB RAM. The combination helped the laptop score well in PCMark 7, our general processor performance test. It scored 2,169, right in line with other recent laptops Dell 6171R Battery, like the HP dv7-6135dx (2,282) or the Lenovo V570-1066A9U (2,066). Similar results were seen in our Cinebench R11.5 processor speed test, where the i15RN5110-5816DBK scored 2.61 points. This is in line with other Core i5-equipped laptops, like the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118x ($1099 direct, 4 stars) (2.56) and Asus K53E-B1 ($770 street, 4 stars) (2.74), but falls far behind more expensive laptops with Core i7 processors, like the Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct, 4 stars) (3.03) or Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) (5.07).

In this configuration, the processor is also the sole source of graphics support, but thanks to the improved integrated graphics found in Intel's second-gen processors, there is still some gaming capability. In 3DMark 06, the i15RN5110-5816DBK scored 4,145 points at medium resolution, and 1,882 at high resolution. This fell behind other laptops Dell 53977 Battery with Intel integrated graphics, like the Asus K53E-B1 (4,950 points at medium resolution), and even further behind systems with discrete graphics processors, like the Toshiba M645-S4118X (7,364 medium, 5,329 high), the Dell XPS 15z (8,909 medium, 5,541 high), and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) (10,878 medium, 8,671 high). Despite these lower scores, the i15RN5110-5816DBK still showed promise for basic gaming, putting out 17 frames per second in both Crysis and Lost Planet 2 at medium resolution. Be aware, however, that neither test would even run at higher resolution and high-end gaming will be out of the question on this laptop.

Multimedia tests results show pretty clearly that in video and photo work the Dell Inspiron i15R, with its Core i5 processor, is just as well equipped as the Dell 5081P Battery more expensive Core i7 systems. In Handbrake video encoding tests the Dell Inspiron scored 1 minute 53 seconds, and 4 minutes 9 seconds in our Photoshop CS5 image manipulation tests. Compared with the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) (1:53 HandBrake, 3:58 Photoshop CS5) and the Dell XPS 15z (2:17 HandBrake, 3:40 Photoshop CS5) it's clear that photo and video editing is one area where the Dell can be competitive.

In our MobileMark 2011 battery test, the i15RN5110-5816DBK lasted 3 hours 53 minutes, which is on par for a 6-cell, 48Wh battery. The Toshiba M645-S4118X had a similar 6-cell battery and nearly identical score (3:52). The HP dv7-6135dx, on the other hand, produced on of the best battery times in a 15-inch desktop replacement (9:28) thanks to a giant 9-cell, 100Wh Dell 3R305 Battery.

The Dell Inspiron i15RN5110-5816DBK is a competent desktop replacement, and anyone purchasing one can be confident that it will meet their day-to-day needs admirably. While it is a well-built laptop with a full feature set, you will find other competing systems offering better performance for less, like the Dell 315-0084 Battery, the Editors' Choice for budget laptops.

The march forward has been steady enough that it might have gone unnoticed, but the battery life for laptop PCs and other portable devices is getting longer. In the GCN Lab’s May 2007 roundup of laptop PCs, the Dell Latitude D830 lasted the longest in the Lab’s worst-case-scenario battery test, clocking a time of 3 hours, 4 minutes. In this year’s laptop roundup, Apple’s MacBook Pro led the field with a time of 5 hours, 13 minutes.

That’s a sign of progress for mobile users, reflecting advances in the development of lower-power systems, for one thing. But it’s not that simple, of course. A lot of factors go into the battery life of a mobile device, including the type of processors, display screens and the batteries themselves – say, whether they are six, eight or nine cells. A laptop manufacturer looking to make a light, highly portable machine might sacrifice battery life for the lighter weight of a smaller battery such as Dell 9943E Battery, Dell 9T119 Battery, Dell 9T255 Battery, Dell 9X821 Battery, Dell BAT1194 Battery, Dell BAT1297 Battery, Dell BAT30WL Battery, Dell BAT3151L8 Battery, Dell BATDW00L Battery, Dell BAT-I5000 Battery, Dell C1295 Battery, Dell C5331 Battery, for instance.

Nevertheless, if battery life is paramount to you, the length of time your laptop keeps running outweighs, as it were, those other factors. And, overall, manufacturers have been making progress. So, how did the six laptops the Lab recently reviewed stack up in this category?

The Lab tests battery life by running a movie on the hard drive, with the screen brightness and sound each set to 80 percent, a scenario designed to put a lot of stress on the battery. Most users -- the ones not using their PCs as a home theater system substitute -- would find that their laptops last longer than the time listed here.

The top battery performers from this year’s review:

◦Apple MacBook Pro: 5 hours, 13 minutes.

◦Lenovo ThinkPad W510: 3 hours, 21 minutes.

◦Samsung P580: 2 hours, 33 minutes.

◦HP EliteBook 8540w: 2 hours, 10 minutes.

◦Sony Vaio EB Series: 2 hours, 2 minutes.

◦Fujitsu LifeBook E780: 1 hour, 49 minutes.

The laptops in that review were powerhouse machines, posting high scores on the PassMark Benchmark tests the Lab uses. But if you need that much juice, you might opt for a netbook. They're small, light and inexpensive, but with less powerful processors – though still adequate for many uses. Netbooks might not have big batteries, but they don’t really need them.

Battery life times from the Lab’s November 2009 netbook roundup:

◦Toshiba Mini NB205-N210: 6 hours, 17 minutes.

◦Sony Vaio W-series: 4 hours, 30 minutes.

◦Dell Latitude 2100: 4 hours, 28 minutes.

◦HP Mini 5101: 4 hours, 5 minutes.

◦Fijutsu M2010: 3 hours, 42 minutes.

◦Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2: 2 hours, 35 minutes.

If you need power and durability in the field, of course, rugged laptops are the obvious choice. You have to accept extra weight for the power and ruggedization, but you don’t have to trade off battery life, in most cases. Battery times for laptops and convertible tablet PCs from the Lab’s October 2009 rugged roundup:

◦Panasonic Toughbook 30: 6 hours, 14 minutes.

◦General Dynamics Itronix GD 8000: 4 hours, 45 minutes.

◦Getac V100: 2 hours, 6 minutes.

In July 2010, the Lab tested the new Toughbook 31. It lasted 4 hours, 30 minutes in the battery test, but it’s also worth noting that it’s a much more powerful machine than the 30, scoring nearly twice as high on the PassMark Benchmark test.

Short battery life was once the bane of mobile computing, but these days it’s fairly easy to find a device that will at least get you through most domestic flights, or let you work from the back porch. And even longer times could be ahead, considering that the Apple iPad typically get 10 hours from a single charge.
